Recalling the past, the memories are alive
From a Start-up to a Front-Runner, My 17 Years with Shanghai Pudong Software Park SPSP 25th Anniversary Exclusive Interview: SDS Report
2017-07-21
On July 20th, 2017, Shanghai Pudong Software Park (SPSP) started celebrating its 25th anniversary. Over the 25 years, it has been the home of nearly one thousand enterprises. Some of them moved in when the Park was just established. Since then, they have been growing together with the Park and already become the ‘big trees’ in different areas. Some of them moved in when the Park was already in the stage of booming development. And now they are stepping forward with the Park hand in hand. As one of the earliest software parks in China, along the road of 25-year development, generations of brilliant SPSP people have left one milestones after another, marking out their courage to take the lead, their braveness to pioneer in no man’s land, and their painstaking efforts to unite enterprises in the Park and all sectors of the society, for a common development.
25 years old is the prime of youth and the age to chase dreams. On this very moment, we interviewed some of the enterprises in the Park. Now let’s hear their stories and their congratulations to SPSP.
An Exclusive Interview of Mr. Zhang Jianfeng, the General Manager of Shanghai Data Solution
In 1999, in response to state’s calling for promoting enterprise informatization, the SDS was founded. In 2000, SDS moved in the Guoshoujing Park of SPSP. Unlike many young enterprises in SPSP, SDS and SPSP established an indissoluble bound as early as 17 years ago. In other words, both parties are truly old friends that share growth and development with each other. The day of this SPSP 25th Anniversary Exclusive Interview is exactly the SDS’s 18th Anniversary Day. Let’s go and see what SDS has to say to us!
In 2000, when the Phase I Project of Guoshoujing Park, the first park of SPSP, was just finished, SDS, one of the first enterprises, moved in. Then, over the following 17 years, building blocks started rising from the ground one after another. And the SDS is, so to speak, the best witness of all these happenings.
Speaking of the changes and development of SPSP, Mr. Zhang, found himself filled with all sorts of feelings, said, “From the first one, the Guoshoujing Park, to the Zuchongzhi Park, and again to Sanlin Park, and to Kunshan Park, SPSP has a very fast development. But more importantly, SPSP was able to improve its operating capacity as fast as its growth. In recent years, the ‘weight’ of enterprises trying to move in SPSP parks are getting increasingly heavier, which has created a wonderful environment for us, enterprises already settled here, to keep a healthy development.”
“When we just moved in SPSP Guoshoujing Park in 2000, we were just a small start-up of 20 employees. The main reason we selected the SPSP was simply that SPSP is a state-level software park where we can find more resources and opportunities.” Mr. Zhang said, “Considering the efforts the SPSP invested to improve management and development over years, I think it’s fair to say that the SPSP has never let us down.”
In nearly two decades, through continuous communications and cooperation with SPSP and based on unremitting effort, SDS has already grown into an industry-leading enterprise of 200 formal employees that create RMB 400 million revenues every year. The supports from SPSP played a very important role in the SDS’s rapid development.
1+1>2: SPSP surprises me more than a little
When speaking of the cooperation with SPSP, Mr. Zhang told us many stories. From the very beginning, it’s been SDS’s original plan to base itself in Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park and spread its business to Shanghai and, then, the whole country. To help SDS achieve this goal as soon as possible, SPSP opened for SDS a lot of channels leading to some high quality resources. And the best example of SPSP’s help should be how it successfully enabled the cooperation between SDS and Citibank.
Of course, while giving channels, resources and other supports, the SPSP was also very interested in SDS’s platform technologies. According to Mr. Zhang, in 2002, both parties reached an investment agreement to establish a joint venture, i.e. Shanghai Pudong Software Technologies Service Co., Ltd. (SPSTS), one of the earliest enterprises providing valued-added software service in China. Currently, the SPSTS has grown into a leading company in providing all industrial customers with information system whole lifespan quality guarantee service, electronic data service and expert testimony service, to meet the need of IT development in all industries. Now, SDS still is one of the founding shareholders of the SPSTS.
2000-2017: 17 Years of Growing Together
What do 25 years mean to a hi-tech park, a history or a period of accumulation? Mr. Zhang sees it differently, “The coming of 25th anniversary means one thing to me: the SPSP is like a 25 year old youth who have passed through the buzzing and energetic teenage days and have laid good foundations in all important aspects, and now, here comes the greatest time for it to cut a striking figure in front of the world. Today, the SPSP has the development speed and commercial potential that no other domestic high-tech park has. So, to me personally, the 25 years look like a great milestone inscribed with the brilliant history that the SPSP has written.”
It’s coincident that when the SPSP celebrated its 25th anniversary, SDS welcomed its 18th birthday. Hearing that the SPSP selected ‘Inspire Dreams, March on to Future’ as the theme of its 25th anniversary celebration, Mr. Zhang was deeply moved, saying “This year is SDS’s 18th anniversary. It’s a tough journey to go through all the difficulties in the start-up stage and all the ups and downs in the growing stage and finally make our way here.” About future objectives and dreams ahead, Mr. Zhang made it very clear, “SDS will continue working on market docking supports, and hopefully, providing the society with better services.”
Life in Park, Managed with Care
Ever since the first park was opened in 2000, the SPSP has been devoting itself to creating for all enterprise in the Park first-class office environment, R&D environment, natural and eco-environment, cultural and living environment, innovation and development environment, as well as a service system functioning well at multiple layers and at all aspects. Over two decades, like a postcard of Shanghai science and technology innovation industry, the SPSP has successfully attracted a swarm of software and information service enterprises from home and abroad to its parks, and, witnessed fast and continuous growth of the number of enterprises settled here, employment, output value and paid taxes.
Witnessing all these changes happening, Mr. Zhang said that he noticed that currently, the SPSP already had a very complete set of recreational facilities, although he didn’t have much time to fully enjoy them, but from what he heard from his colleagues, he could see that the SPSP really cares about providing people in the Park with all necessary amenities, and he felt happy to work in a hi-tech park who really cares about people. With a big smile, he said, “If you really want me to pick an area for further improvement, I’d say, only if the car-parking in the park could be as easy as it was 17 years ago.”
At the time of SPSP’s 25th anniversary, the SDS, just like other enterprises settled here, congratulated us with the sincerest blessings. They wish they could keep on walking with SPSP side by side for the next 25 years.
